If you have space for a grill, you probably also have space for a pet–but the two shouldn’t be in the same space at the same time as pet safety can’t be guaranteed around a grill. Dogs can smell meat from a fair distance away and, like their human owners, they know a good steak when they smell one. Even cats can get in the way of your grilling if they’re an outdoor cat or you’re trying to grill on a screened-in patio. Which is why we are presenting 5 actionable tips to ensure grilling safety for pets.

You may assume that a well-trained pet can be trusted around grills, but that isn’t usually the case. Sometimes, even humans forget that a surface or utensil is hot, and animals have no way of knowing the danger either. A closed grill lid looks safe from a distance, but can actually result in serious burns on animals’ sensitive paw pads.

Plus, plates that held raw meat can be breeding grounds for bacteria, and undercooked meat scraps and bones can be hazardous for dogs, cats, and other animals. Even if you feed your animals occasional table scraps, the nature of grilling means that the grill master must exercise additional caution. Guests and other family members need to be made aware of these as well. Here are our best tips for maintaining Grilling Safety for Pets around your grill.

1. Keep Pets Away

When proper precautions aren’t taken, grilling can even be hazardous for humans. It’s even more important to keep our four-legged friends away from anything that can burn them. Even if your dog is well-trained, make sure he can’t come anywhere near the grill. Dogs may act in unexpected ways when they can smell food nearby, and any unexpected behavior can send burgers tumbling to the ground.

Cats and small dogs, in particular, can get underfoot faster than you realize, resulting in a trip hazard. Cats or dogs that are particularly good at jumping can even end up putting their paws on a hot grill lid–or worse.

Though your dog or cat may hate being kept inside, indoors is the safest place for them while grilling. A screened-in porch or a leash is also an option if your yard is large enough to keep the grill a safe distance away. Make sure your family and guests know that you’re grilling and that the animals need to be kept inside.

2. Don’t Feed Scraps

A barbecue may seem like the perfect time to treat your pets as well as yourself. After all, beef, chicken and pork are in your pets’ food, so it should be safe to give them–right?

While it’s okay to give your pets plain cooked meat as a snack occasionally, grilling is not the time to do so. For starters, it trains your pets to associate the grill with food, which will make it harder to keep them away from it in the future. Meat scraps fresh from the grill may be hotter than you realize, causing burns to your pet’s mouth and tongue.

Remember that many sauces and spices can upset your pet’s stomach–even if they’re “all-natural.” Avocados, onions, garlic and a number of other foods can be toxic to dogs and cats. can be toxic to dogs and cats. Animals can also be sensitive to the amount of fat in the meat. Fatty meats can cause gas and bloat at best, or pancreatitis if consumed in large quantities.

Don’t let your pet lick grill utensils, unwashed plates or cooked bones, either. Parts of a recently-used grill fork or tongs can be hotter than you realize. Plates that held raw meat could easily cause food poisoning. Cooked bones can easily splinter in a dog’s mouth, and while raw bones are theoretically safe, an improperly cleaned bone can also cause food poisoning. If you want to give your pet a treat during your party, stick with store-bought treats or plain food cooked ahead of time.

3. Lock Up Supplies

The grill itself isn’t the only hazard present. Charcoal, lighter fluid and grill forks need to be kept far away from curious animals’ reach. Though charcoal may seem entirely unappetizing to humans, dogs have been known to eat worse things! Lighter fluid can also pose a hazard if it spills or a curious pet bites the bottle. Grill forks can be sharp at the ends and can also harbor bacteria if they aren’t cleaned after use.

Consider keeping these items on a high-up shelf in a shed. Since outdoor cats can climb or jump into surprisingly high spaces, even the garage may not be safe, so a shed with a latching door may be the best place. Avoid keeping lighter fluid in or near the house, as it can be a fire hazard. You can also consider getting a locking wood or metal storage box to keep in your yard.

Grilling

4. Clean Up Properly

Did you know that animals will sometimes even eat foil and plastic wrap? While they may not eat it straight out of the kitchen drawer, they will assume it’s food if it has a meaty scent on it. Even if the grill is turned off and cooled down, don’t let the animals back into the yard until everything is thoroughly cleaned up and put away. Plates that held raw meat could be breeding bacteria and a stray bone that fell to the ground could pose a choking hazard.

Cleaning up is also essential for keeping pets from eating meat drippings. Excessive grease can be really bad for your pets’ health. Since grease can fall out of the bottom of your grill, consider using a greased pan to catch drippings, or make sure to clean your grill area well afterward. Different types of grills have different clean-up needs and even cool down at various rates, so make sure to double-check everything at the end of the day.

5. Have a Plan B

Even the best-laid plans sometimes fail when it comes to grilling, and that’s especially true when there’s an animal involved. Your pet may escape the confines of the living room and dart outside, or a well-meaning guest may provide a bit of food that causes a serious upset stomach.

Have a deterrent, like a spray bottle or noisemaker, by the grill in case you need to prevent a hungry pet from running at you while you’re cooking. Also, have an emergency vet number on hand in case you need it. If you’re grilling on a holiday weekend, remember that your regular vet may not be available to help.

Smoky, juicy meat over the burning charcoal filled grill is how a summer grilling session with friends and family should be. Although it is common for us to go for a can of chilled beer to enjoy, pairing grilled food and wines is also a good activity to do to beat the summer heat.

Beers and smoky meats are indeed a match made in heaven, but a glass of delicious vino over the malted barley is definitely a gastronomic delight! If you want to know how you can make this grilled food and wine a magic pair, take a read!

Knowing the Science Behind Wine Pairing

Technically speaking, science can explain the behind-the-scenes of any phenomena. As what people say, “there’s always a reason for everything.” So, does with wine pairing.

So, the key when you pair food with wine is knowing what will the combination tastes like. With grilled meats, bold red wines are the best pair for them. Why? That is because of the high fat in the meat and its umami balance out the tannins produced by red wine.

On the other hand, if you go for grilling fish and poultry, then the best choice would be full-flavored whites and rose. Why? Because the stated wines act as a palate cleanser that does not overwhelm the grilled fish or chicken.

Now you see why it has something to do with the dishes and the characters of wine, right? So, shall we proceed to the breakdown of the grill and wine pairing?

Barbecue Meat Wine Pairings

Since you already know that you need to take into account the used raw ingredients such as meat and poultry with the wine, you also need to think about the taste that comes with the dishes.

For instance, grilled pork dishes are more on the sweet and savory type. So, red wines that have high-fruit factor or with a hint of sweetness such as Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, Ruby Port, and Riesling will pair well with grilled pork.

On the other hand, grilled beef is more on the pepper and smoky side, if you have observed. Thus, choose wines that would enhance its flavors like Chianti, Tempranillo, Shiraz, and bordeaux blend.

More About Grilled Meat and Wine Pairing

When you grill meat, you often season it with sweet, spicy, tangy, and smoky flavors with its matching sauces, right? With that said, you make use of your wine as the upper-hand that balances out the smoke and spiciness of the grilled meat with something fruity with smoky-spicy flavors.

Also, you should take into consideration the types of sauce that you will be using with your grilled meat. For instance, the North Carolina Barbecue Sauce is a sweet one, so you might want to opt for Monastrell, Pinotage, Petite Sirah, and Tannat.

Another example would be Kansas City Barbecue Sauce which belongs to the classic sauce category wherein wines like Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet blend will do the trick.

As for grilled beef, wines like Chianti (or Sangiovese), American Oak-Aged Merlot, Cabernet France, and Syrah will help out in enhancing the smoky and peppery flavors of grilled beef dish.

Chicken and Fish Wine Pairing

Let’s proceed with our grill and wine pairing, grilled fish and chicken dishes are next in line. The way we pair wines with the stated grilled dishes is not that big of a difference with the initial pairing of barbecue meat and wine.

With this said, think of how you would grill a chicken, it will be seasoned with herbs or sweet sauce, right? Thus, you should consider that. When you pair grilled chicken with wine, think about herbal or sweet. So, you should try the dish with Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, White Zinfandel, and Orvieto.

On the other hand, grilled fish are more on the flavorful and juicy side. Thus, buttery and zippy wines will delight your palate through blending in and enhancing the flavors of the grilled fish. With this, Oaked Chardonnay, Verdejo, Friulano, and White Rioja will do the dishes justice.

More About Grilled Fish and Chicken Wine Pairing

On to the grill and wine pairing of fish and chicken, one must put into account the style of the dish. Confused? Then let’s break it down little by little.

If you are someone that prefers lighter taste like a simple grilled chicken and fish, then Sauvignon Blanc, Oaked Chardonnay, or Verdejo will accompany you to a gastronomic delight of citrusy, grassy, and light taste. Think of simplicity and sophistication in one.

Now, for barbecue grilled chicken dishes, with its sticky and sweet sauce with grill marks, a more intense Gewürztraminer wine will be an excellent choice! Here’s a tip, try it with blue cheese to create an exciting blend of flavor and aroma!

Lastly, if you want to spin things differently with your essential salt, pepper, and tomatoes or cilantro for fish tacos, then you might want to take this recommendation of a nicely chilled Sauvignon Blanc, Fume Blanc, Grechetto, or Verdejo to play off a citrusy and mineral taste to the palate.

Takeaway

Pairing grilled food and wine is not that complicated if you know what to do and understand what you are looking for. What you always need to remember is that you need to put the individual flavors of your dishes and wine when you want it to pair with each other.

Grilling Season Is Just Around The Corner

And while there are a plethora of meats, including seafood, you can just slap on the grill to great effect, there’s also a fantastic option that tastes just as good grilled than fresh, if not better – with a delectable, luscious flavor that just works perfectly with the flame.

We’re talking about fruit – and it seems like fresh fruit and flame are simply a match made in heaven.

Rightfully so; the rich, juicy flavors of certain fruits intensify as its fructose caramelizes in the blazing heat. Fruits burst with flavor with its juice drawn right where its flesh is, and that delicious char that wraps up the fruit with smoke from the grill is what makes it a treat meant for the gods.

Those enticing grill marks make the fruits it even more gorgeous – just make sure to use the right grill to seal those juices in. We’ve reviewed several Weber grills, which definitely offer some of the best gas grills for this purpose. Don’t take our word for it though, you can also check allthestuff.com, and you’ll see that we’re not the only ones who like Weber so much.

That’s not to say you should just slap on random fruits on the grill willy-nilly – naturally, there are fruits that work better than others…. but some fruits were just made to be grilled.

Here are some of our best fruit to grill that will do in a pinch:

Pineapples

pineapple grilling
Pineapples are not just for kebabs – it can hold its own when grilled alone. Pineapples are unimaginably delicious whenever grilled over an open flame, as its natural acidity and tanginess turn to a deeply fragrant and sweet flavor. It is the best fruit to grill for the perfect accompaniment to a robust cut of meat.

Stone fruits

Nectarines, peaches, and apricots are actually among the most common fruits you’ll most often see on the grill – they are of course a divine accompaniment to meats such as pork chops and meats. Simply cut several fruits in half, skin on, discard the pit, and grill with its fleshy side down for about 2-3 minutes. Their sweet, tart flavors are the perfect counterpart to the robust flavors of the meat.

Avocados

Avocado Grilling
We know we already did stone fruits – and we know avocado is one. But it’s just so good grilled that it deserves its separate mention. Avocado’s fatty, rich, and mildly sweet flesh is delectable when grilled over coals, and turns it into a very creamy, warm treat. Plus, char marks give it a nice roasted flavor. Throw it on a salad for a real treat!

Bananas

Grilled bananas are the perfect way to finish off a sumptuous, hearty grilled meal. There’s plenty of applications using grilled bananas for dessert, including grilled banana splits, or simply as they are, drizzled with a little maple syrup and toffee sauce. Or anything analogous to such a delectable treat.

Apples

Grilled Apples
Apples are crazy good whenever they’re cooked in any way, shape or form. Candied, baked, caramelized – it doesn’t matter. Well, the same is true when they’re grilled because the intense heat makes the sweetness of the apple shine. Simply cut into slices and grill for a minute or two.

Pears

Just like apples before it, pears are just as good as apples when they are cooked – particularly when grilled. Their similar textures and taste guarantee a winner when you pop some slices on the grill for an appetizing dessert that goes perfectly with your grilled meal. As with apples, drizzle with a little bit of syrup and a dash of cinnamon, and you’ve got a barn-burner of a palate cleanser.

Tomatoes

Grilled Tomatoes
Let’s make one thing perfectly clear – tomatoes are fruits in the botanical sense of the word. And they are the best accompaniment to grilled meat. Simply cut them in half, throw in some olive oil and a dash of salt and pepper, and grill both sides for about 4-5 minutes each… and voila!

Cantaloupe

Cantaloupe makes for a perfect accompaniment to ice cream or yogurt when grilled, just like bananas and apples before it. Cut them into wedges and grill each side for not more than 2 or 3 minutes per side. Elevate it into a divine dessert with a light sprinkle of unfiltered honey and pair with a cold scoop of ice cream or yogurt.

Mangoes

Mango Grilling
It’s not uncommon to see a slice of grilled pork or chicken dish come with a mango sauce, so it should come as no surprise to know that grilled slices of mango make for the perfect marriage with grilled pork chops. Or think about putting a really mean grilled mango salsa together – simple, easy, and quick. That’s something for your guests to write home about, right?

That said, just about any fruit can be slapped on a gas grill for as long as they are firm and not mushy nor overripe – anything for as long as they will maintain their shape over the flame. Let your imagination run wild and try other similar fruit – you might just stumble into an appetizing, enticing, and healthy treat.

Despite a tendency of growing a number of vegetarians in the modern world, there are still enough followers of meat and fish dishes. And, surely, most of them prefer cooking such meals not by means of boiling, as the tastiest dish is fried, roasted or cooked on the grilled meat. So, let’s focus on the last way of cooking some delicious masterpieces, its pros, and cons.

What Are the Health Benefits of Grilling?

Grilling Benefits
Thermal treatment of food on a grill is a short-term roasting with a high temperature. Compared to frying, this way of cooking the dishes is much more useful, as a result of such a process we receive a delicacy being not as rich in saturated fats, cholesterol as after frying, so grilled meals are certainly more useful for health than the fried meals. One more health benefits of grilling is that the food has fewer calories than fried food. And the calories rate is decreasing if you don’t use oils and animal fat while cooking meat or fish on the grill. Natural fats dripping out of the meat while being heated are evaporating, generally. The rest of the fat doesn’t turn into cancer genes poisoning your organism.

One of the significant health benefits of grilling is thought to be the highest possible preservation of nutrients in the food, that is vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates, and other useful substances. When boiling these elements are present in a broth, and when frying they are almost completely broken. For more information about charcoal grills, have a peek here.

The food, which was cooked on a grill, maybe eaten by people with chronic ailments of the digestive tract. In particular, the grilled food may be consumed by those who suffer from cholecystitis, gastritis, liver, and pancreas gland problems. In fact, when having such ailments, it’s better to give preference to grilled fruits, veggies and mushrooms as the dieticians claim they are more useful than the fish and meat fillet cooked on a grill. However, before starting a process of cooking it’s worth wrapping a product in foil. By the way, this little trick will be helpful for preserving the flavorful taste of the food.

The simplest means of grilling is baking products over an open fire in the fresh air. The potatoes cooked like this are considered to be safe for health and rather tasty for enjoying the food. This refers to baking unpeeled roots in the hot ashes.

The products cooked on electrical grills are normally hearty and digestible, as infra-red rays radiating from a grill penetrate deep into the food being cooked, and it doesn’t destroy any chemical compounds stored naturally in this food. The primary texture of the delicacy is also left untouched. The food prepared in the fresh air is also famous for its incredible odor and brown crust.

Harmfulness of the Grilled Products

Harms of Grilling
Unfortunately, there is more harm from the grilling than benefits.

Thermal treatment of the meat and fish, being too fat, increases their caloric value, which wasn’t small at the start of the cooking process, too. The content of harmful compounds called sterols also increases after the thermal treatment, so frequent consumption of such foods increases the risk of excess weight development, atherosclerosis (because of increasing the levels of bad cholesterol in the blood) and provokes a lipid storage disease development. Consequently, problems with a heart or increase or arterial pressure might start.

The supplementary usage of oils and animal fats when grilling meat, fish or veggies contributes to creating carcinogenic substances in such food type. This happens because of the high heating of oils and fats or dripping the fat on the fire and its further burning. The cancerogenesis are very dangerous for human health, as they contribute to the development and growth of cancer cells, accelerating aging processes and becoming the organism full of toxins. The meat pieces with crackling are especially rich in these dangerous substances.

Undercooked grilled food isn’t useful for human health, either. Such meat may be a source of infections like campylobacteriosis (poultry meat), Yersinia bacteria (pork), E-coli infecting agent (pork). People catching these infections experience general discomfort first, and later they start having symptoms of food poisoning like diarrhea, sickness, vomiting and high temperature. But, in fact, the situation is much worse.

The flammable liquids used for starting a fire, that is alcohol, gas, chemical spirit make the delicacies, cooked with the help of grilling, harmful. There is always a danger of penetrating toxic components of these substances into meat, veggies or fish. The same thing goes for using newspapers and rotten wood. When using newspapers for making a fire printing ink contains lead, which tends not only to settle down in the lungs, but also get accumulated in an organism.

Usage of a special grill pan and a short-term baking of a product in a microwave has a negative impact on human health, as well. When using a grill pan, you can’t avoid using additional fats and oils, and in the second case, a delicacy might lose practically all mineral and biologically active components.

Secrets of Useful Food Cooking on a Grill

Food Grilling Benefits

  • If you are firm about creating a cooking masterpiece while using an open fire, try to use only charcoal for making a fire and avoid using the abovementioned flammable liquids. But remember that the log pieces produced from softwood are not desirable for usage, as they contain plenty of resins. Using a pellet smoker can make your grilling endeavour a lot more easy and safe. Pellet smokers are convenient and safe. Moreover, different kinds of wood pellets provide you lot of flavour options to go with.
  • Start grilling products as soon as charcoal turns into grey ashes. Under these conditions, the temperature isn’t so high and the food will not be burnt or charred, as a result.
  • Avoid cooking food over an open fire, as you protect yourself from consuming carcinogenic substances together with the products, which are capable of provoking oncological disease development.
  • Before the start of the food grilling, try to place the products into the aluminum tray. The same goes with the foil, which you have already heard about. Using this trick also prevents from penetrating the harmful carcinogenic substances into your delicacy.
  • Before being grilled on a fire, meat or fish should be marinated. With the marinating process, you will manage to reduce the time required for cooking The food itself will come out incredibly tender, juicy and digestible for an organism. The shortest suggested time for keeping the meat of fish in a sauce is sixty minutes. As the marinade you might use a mixture of olive oil with spices, mayo or beer. If you are going to grill mutton, the perfect marinade for it should be a mixture consisting of black tea, olive oil, black pepper, garlic, and rosemary. Poultry meat is often marinated in a mixture of some oil, red wine, red pepper and marjoram for an hour. Before placing the meat on a grill, dry the marinated product up with a cotton or paper towel.
  • For bringing a savory taste and odor to the food, use the spices and seasonings. Just spread them on your fish or meat.
  • It is forbidden to cook frozen products on a grill.
  • Salt the food at the very end of a grilling process. At the same time of cooking, you should add the marinade leftovers to the food.
  • Do you want to cook useful shish kebab on a grill? So, cook the veggies with the meat, as well. Try to use as many veggies as you can, there must be more vegetables than meat on a grill.
  • If you long for some grilled chicken, you are able to have it, even if you keep to a diet or your stomach is out of order. Just take a piece of chicken breast and strip the skin from it (that is obligatory). All the harmful and fatty substances are present in the skin. The same goes for the grilled chicken purchased in a store. Besides the brown and fat skin, it has plenty of salt and seasonings. After stripping its skin, the problem will be solved.
  • Try to grill the food in a foil, as it was mentioned before, or under a lid.

You might get benefit from any product, as well as meat, and the grilled food will be beneficial for your health when cooking in the right way. The veggies prepared on a grill will be beneficial not only for your figure but also for the whole organism.

There is one more useful tip for you: after finishing grilling or doing barbeque, you must clean the grill, on which the products were being cooked with the use of charcoal or other ways of grilling. Do it with all due care, as the coal residues or the ones from the previous cooking will do a lot of harm to your food taste and your health during the next cooking. BBQ grilling and smoking meats are amongst the most delicious and popular cooking ways. If you are a BBQ lover like me, you must have a grilling machine in your home. Depending on your flavor preference and budgetary constraints, it can be a gas grill, electric smoker, pellet smoker or charcoal grill. Whichever grill machines you have, it represents a good amount of investment of yours. It is logical that you should do proper maintenance of your grilling machine to make it last longer and deliver the maximum utility.

No matter how well you took care of your grilling machine, it is pretty normal to have troubleshooting with them sooner or later. And bbq repair is a costly business. Although the design of grilling machines varies on the types and models of grilling machines, the basic functions are more or less the same. So it will be super helpful if you understand the basic working process of grilling machines. It might save you a lot of money in times of need.

Basic Design of a Smoker / Grill Machine

Whether it is a gas grill, charcoal grill or offset smokers, the basic function of grill machines remains the same, which is cooking meat with indirect smoky heat without losing the tenderness of the meat. There is a heat generation place where the fire is made through burning gas fuel, charcoals, or electricity depending on the type of grill machine.

Basic Design of Smoker Grills
Basic Design of Smoker Grills

Except, gas grills and electric smokers, most grill machines use wood chunks as burning fuel. In the case of gas grills and electric grills, there is a regulator, burner and ignitor. The regulator is there for controlling the fuel flow and the burner helps to evenly distribute the heat. If the machine is large, there can be more than one, two or more burners.

Basically, the heat generated by burning fuel is channeled into the meat. Most grills have an airtight patio, cover or lid to trap the heated smoke which ultimately cooks the meat. There is a space for wood pellet chip placement in between the flame and cooking grate. The heat goes through the pellet chips which enhances the smoky flavor by manifold. In recent models, there is also a place for a water pan right below the grate. The water pan serves two purposes here. Firstly, it catches all the drips from the meat and secondly, the moisture helps the meat to retain its tenderness.

Different Types of Offset Smokers
Different Types of Offset Smokers

In most of the grill machines, the meat is placed directly above the heat. But in pellet and offset smokers, the firebox is situated beside the cooking grate and the heat is channeled to the adjacent cooking chambers as depicted in the image below. Thus, the cooking process is comparatively slower than other grill machines but it ensures the perfectly smoked meat.

Finally, depending on the grill machine model and version there can be many other parts or accessories attached to the smoker to ease the cooking process. Thermostat, air pockets are perfect examples of such tools.

BBQ Grill Repairing Guide

Now that you understand how a bbq smoker works, it will be easy to grasp the problem you are facing with your grill machine. There are few grill problems that occur frequently especially if you are using a gas grill. Here are some common grill problems and how to fix those grill machine problems that might occur with your smoker.

1. Low Temperature with Low Flame

Grilling Temperature
Low flame on grill is one of the most common grill problems. The fuel line regulators are the main culprits in most of the time. Regulators tend to be sticky when they start to wear out gradually. A sticky regulator hampers the proper gas flows and ultimately hinders the flaming up to the desired temperature required for perfect grilling. To solve the gas grill low flame regulator problems you can try the following steps.

  • Open the grill lid and turn off the gas flow from the tank.
  • Detach the fuel line from the gas tank
  • Turn the dial of all the control valves to maximum and leave it for one or two minutes to release any gas within the smoker and gas line.
  • Reconnect the fuel line to the tank.
  • Turn on the gas line slowly and ignite the grill,
  • Your grill should heat up normally after this. If not, then check the venturi tubes and consider replacing the fuel line regulator.

2. Orange or Yellow Flame

This problem is prevalent among the gas grill models. Orange or yellow flames indicate problems in the control valves and venturi tubes. The venturi tubes can be found right under the control valve and beneath the burner. The problem can arise from any misalignment or obstruction between the shutters and the tubes. It is essential to clear out any clogs inside the venturi tubes or adjust the air shutter to get the perfect blue flame for grilling.

If your gas grill is generating yellow or orange flame, you should check and adjust the burner and the venturi tube of your grill machines by following these steps:

  • Locate the adjustment screw. Usually, you will find the adjustment screw attached to the burner. This screw is responsible for mixing the air with the propane gas. If the screw is tighter than it should be, then the burner would generate a nasty looking uneven yellow or orange flame. If it is loose then the burner might not burn properly.
  • Turn the grill on by lighting and make it low.
  • Loosen the air shutter by rotating the adjusting screw counterclockwise. Loosen until the flame gets mostly blue.
  • Turn off the flame and tighten the adjustment screw.
  • Clean any cloggage from the burner. You can use a snake brush if required.

3. Uneven Heating/Hot Spots

Uneven heating is very common grill problem which occurs due to any blockage in the burner unit. You have to clean your burner unit or units to solve this problem. Depending on the level of blockage you might have to detach the burner from the grill. After cleaning as much as you can light on the grill with the full flame for 15 minutes.

4. Gas Grill Just Won’t Light

Grilling
If you are having this problem it is most likely that it is due to the igniters. Some grills have piezo-electric igniters or push-button igniters and some are battery-powered. It is very common to wear out the ignition batteries after some time. Check if your igniter is generating any spark or not.

You can get to the igniters by pulling off the cooking grates and the barrier and thus exposing the burners. Try to locate the position of the igniters (generally, at the root end of the burner) and push the ignition button. You should see a small spark or hear the sound of a click (Or a stream of clicks in case of electric smokers) if your grill machine has piezo-electric or push-button igniters. If your igniter is jammed, clean it very carefully and recheck it. Consider replacing the batteries if deemed necessary.

5. Grill Produces a Lot of Smoke

If your grill machine is producing a lot of smoke then there may be an excessive amount of grease inside the grill. To avoid such problems, you need to clean your grill machine properly. You can also preheat your grill machine for at least 10 or 15 minutes, before grilling.

6. Flame From Under the Grill, Behind the Control Panel

Inspect if there is any blockage in the air shutters or the venturi tubes. This can also occur if there are any misalignments between the tubes and the burners. Don’t forget to let the grill machine cool down before you start inspecting.

These are some of the most frequent grill troubleshooting problems you might face with your bbq machine. Before attempting to solve your grill problems on your own, please take proper safety measures. Don’t hesitate to call in professionals help if you feel the need for it.

I know the feeling of not liking store-bought BBQ sauce and yet having to buy one. Well, those days are behind us. With the availability of the internet, many homemade recipes are out there for a grab. I’ll talk about a simple homemade spicy BBQ sauce recipe that has been in our family for two generations. This healthy homemade bbq sauce will take your grilling experience to the next level. You can also enjoy this sauce with other kinds of foods of your like. And you can pour, slather or dip your favorite grill or  BBQ meat or seafood to add the rich sweet, sour and spicy flavor of the BBQ sauce. So, start making your own BBQ sauce by following this recipe and feast!

Basics of Making Homemade Spicy BBQ Sauce

Making a good BBQ sauce is not that difficult. Typically, a simple BBQ sauce recipe contains a base of tomato (ketchup/paste), acid, spice and sweetness. You can make your own adjustments to the ingredients according to your preference.

My spicy BBQ sauce recipe resembles the Western South Carolina sauces because of its tangy, sweet and hot taste. I promise you’ll get a kick out of this sauce. While you’re at it, make sure you follow the steps below to ensure you make a quality sauce.

1. Base

Most of the online BBQ sauce recipes you’ll find use tomato sauce as their base. But in my recipe, I’ve used the old fashioned tomato paste, so you can skip on the high fructose on the ketchup. Tomato paste will also provide a consistent thickness to the sauce. I’ve used orange juice for diluting the tomato paste and add both acidity and sweetness to the sauce. If you’re going for a homemade sweet BBQ sauce, use more orange juice. Choose the freshly-squeezed tomato. Don’t go for the ones that have added sugar to them.

2. Sweetness

Don’t use any unnatural sweetening agent. It will make the sauce lose its flavor. Use maple syrup to naturally sweeten the sauce. You’ll also get a great depth of flavor with pure maple syrup. If you’re looking for a sweet BBQ sauce recipe, you can use this recipe.

3. Acidity

To add a sharp taste to the sauce, use Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, and apple cider vinegar. The acidity will not only give that zesty taste to your BBQ sauce but it will cut down the unnecessary sweetness of the sauce and you will get a balance of taste. The acidity will also work as a flavor enhancer.

4. Heat

You can adjust the spice level of capsaicin according to your preference. Some like it very hot while others just crave for a mild kick. I’ll use jalapenos and chipotle powder for more stinging spice, smoky flavor, and sustainable heat.

5. Aroma

If you add garlic, sauteed onions, and paprika, you’ll get a unique layer of flavor in each serving. If you use a dry-heat cooking process, you can bring in new flavors to your sauce which you can’t get out of simply simmering.

Making Homemade Barbecue Sauce

The homemade BBQ sauce we’re going to make goes fantastic with any meat but it goes especially well with grilled meat. It brings in both spicy and sweet flavor to the meat. And now, we’ll discuss the homemade bbq sauce recipe in details.

Ingredients

You’ll need these ingredients to make one cup of the easy BBQ sauce recipe:

  • Vegetable Oil – 1 tbsp
  • Chopped Onion – ½ cup
  • Minced Jalapenos – 1 tsp
  • Minced Garlic – 2 cloves
  • Apple Cider Vinegar – ¼ cup
  • Dijon Mustard – 1 tbsp
  • Worcestershire Sauce – ¼ cup
  • Maple Syrup – ¼ cup
  • Paprika – 1 tbsp
  • Chipotle Powder – ¼ tsp
  • Kosher Salt – 1 tsp
  • Tomato Paste – ¾ cup
  • Orange Juice – ¾ cup

Required time:

  • Preparation: 10 minutes
  • Cooking: 30 minutes
  • Total: 40 minutes

2. Direction

For this healthy BBQ sauce recipe, follow these steps:

  1. Take the oil over a medium-sized saucepan and heat it over a medium temperature
  2. Add sauteed onion to the pan and stir it for about 5 minutes until it gets softened
  3. Put the jalapenos on the mixture and cook the mixture for 30 seconds
  4. Add the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds, so the mix gets fragrant. Lower the heat to a medium-low temperature
  5. Add the apple cider vinegar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, maple syrup, tomato paste, chipotle powder
  6. Bring the mixture to a simmering temperature. Cook over low heat until the sauce gets thickened and the acidity level reduces
  7. Stir the sauce occasionally for 20 minutes
  8. Use a mesh strainer to strain the sauce
  9. Let the sauce cool down to room temperature
  10. Serve the sauce with your favorite meat
  11. For storing the sauce, keep the sauce in an airtight jar or container. Use the sauce for 4 days and keep it in a refrigerator

3. Nutritional Value

These are the nutritional contents of the homemade spicy bbq sauce for each serving (each serving= 1 tbsp of sauce):

Calories 44
Total Fat 1g
Sodium 133mg
Potassium 74mg
Total Carbohydrates 8g
Protein 1g

4. Tips

  • For a spicier taste, increase the amount of chipotle powder
  • You can use cayenne or chili powder instead of chipotle powder
  • For a more smoky flavor, you can use smoked paprika to make the sauce

Summer is just knocking at the door and the grilling season is about to start. You love grilling but why don’t you make your own barbecue sauce on top of grilling the meat? This homemade spicy BBQ sauce will make your grilling experience more interesting. You can never go wrong with this sauce as it goes with both meat and seafood.

Black Forest Cake is one of the favorite desserts of all my family members. Having a German lineage from my mother’s side, I have always had a soft corner for the rich heritage of black forest recipes. Some time ago, as part of my effort to up my BBQ game, I tried to add the delicious cherries, rich flavors of plums and a hint of chocolate to my another favorite barbeque dish which many of you now know as the Country Style Pork Ribs Recipe. I was nervous and tentative to try something new. These ribs were falling off the bone and as my kids said “slap yo mamma so good,” it felt so decadent and delicious!

Encouraged by my family, I served my ‘Baby Pork Ribs Recipe – Black Forest Edition’ to my friends. All who tested have loved it. Now, I am sharing my Black Forest Pork Ribs Recipe with you guys.

This recipe is perfect for serving four people.

Ingredients

2 racks of baby back pork ribs (perfectly membrane removed)

For the Dry Spice Rub

pork ribs:

  • Packed brown sugar — One-fourth of a cup
  • Sweet paprika — One tablespoon
  • Dried roasted garlic — One tablespoon
  • Dried ground chipotle pepper — 1/2 tablespoon
  • black pepper, freshly ground — Two teaspoons
  • Ground celery seeds – 2 teaspoons
  • Ground mustard – 2 teaspoons
  • Kosher salt – 2 teaspoons
  • Herbs de Provence – 2 teaspoons
  • Ground cinnamon – 1 teaspoon
  • Nutmeg, freshly grated – 1/2 teaspoon

For the Mop Sauce

pork ribs:

  • Dark Sweet Pitted Morello Cherries – 1 1/2 cups
  • Red plums, (skinned, pitted and chopped) – 3 medium size
  • Chipotle peppers (canned, seeded and chopped) – 4 medium size
  • Gnarly Head Pinot Noir wine – 1 cup
  • Prepared honey barbecue sauce – 1 cup
  • Tomato paste – 3 tablespoons
  • Packed brown sugar – 2 tablespoons
  • Prepared mole sauce – 1 tablespoon
  • Sorghum – 1 tablespoon or you can use Molasses – 1 tablespoon
  • Orange Zest, freshly grated – 1 tablespoon

For Garnishes

  • Dark Sweet Pitted Morello Cherries – two-third of a cup
  • Red Plums (pitted and sliced) – 3 medium size
  • Dark chocolate, grated or shaved – one-third of a cup

Baby Pork Ribs Recipe: Directions

Place the ribs bone side up on a flat work surface. Make sure that their membrane is well removed. Otherwise, the membrane would not allow the spices to mix up well. In a small bowl, combine all the dry spice rub ingredients, tossing together well until they are well blended. You can use a food processor to ensure a perfect mixture.

Now, sprinkle the dry spice mixture generously over the meat and bones of the pork ribs. Gently rub them with hand and make sure that spice is applied to every area of the ribs. Set the ribs aside for 2 or 3 hours to marinade. This will let the spices enter into the meat.

In a medium-size bowl, combine all the mop sauce ingredients. Using a hand-held immersion blender, blend the mop sauce ingredients until well blended and smoothened or you can add mop sauce ingredients into a blender and process until well blended and smoothened and then pour mop sauce mixture into a medium bowl.

Heat your smoker or grill to a temperature of 325 degrees Fahrenheit. Remember, this is for indirect cooking. So this recipe will be best cooked in smokers that offer you the indirect cooking option. Pellet smokers are best in this case because of the way they work. I personally use PG24 by Camp Chef Pellet Grill and Smoker BBQ. After heating up your pellet smoker, toss 1 and 1/2 cups smoked cherry wood chips on to the fire to heat. This will provide you a smokey bbq flavor. You can try different wood chips to have variation in smokey flavor. My personal favorite is the Hickory wood pellets with this dish. Mesquite pellets are also good but its smoky flavor is strong. So, don’t try it if you are not okay with the strong smokey flavor.

Place the prepared spice rubbed pork ribs on to the grate. For equal cooking, you must make sure that they do not overlap and cover each other. Cook for half an hour. In the meantime, adjust the vent holes and coals to maintain an even heat of 325 degrees F.

After half an hour of cooking, generously rub the mop sauce mixture to all sides of the pork ribs and put the lid on so it starts to be cooked again. Continue applying the mopping sauce mixture to the pork ribs after every 30-minutes. Keep them covered after applying sauces until prepared. The cooking process generally takes about 2 to 3 hours.

Transfer the cooked pork ribs to a large cutting board. Cover them with a large sheet of aluminum foil loosely. Allow the pork ribs to cool down for 10 minutes. After cooling down, cut the cooked pork ribs into pieces and serve each individual pieces with some morello cherries, plum slices. Sprinkle a little grated or shaved chocolate over the cherries and plums. Your Black Forest country style pork ribs are ready to enjoy!

Let me know how you feel after you tried it and don’t forget to try our pork butt recipe as well!

As always, I wanted something a little different for My Sunday, traditional but with a twist. Usually, every time I have lamb, I simply make insertions into the meat and then stud it with garlic and rosemary. This time I decided that I was going to crank the flavor notch up a little.

I wanted something to be lip-smackingly tasty as I have had a flu for a couple of weeks and I wanted something to tingle those taste buds again. So, I wanted big bold flavors and was eager to try some easy lamb recipes, one of them being lamb with sumac garlic and rosemary, roasted root vegetables, lemons served on a bed of pureed celeriac.

After leafing through some cookbooks and a few websites, I had a flash of inspiration. I would go for some Middle Eastern flavors and the top of my list was Sumac. I used sumac recipes several times for lamb cooking and once I was lucky enough to get an authentic recipe from one of my work colleagues. Luckily, his mum still lived out there and he was able to translate the recipe for me. But I digress that’s another story.

Lamb with Sumac Garlic and Rosemary

lamb with garlic sauce:

Sumac

This was not widely known or used within this country until a few years ago and you could only buy it from specialist shops. However, most supermarkets now stock this middle eastern spice. Sumac is grown on bushes and ads a tarty lemon flavor.

The Lamb

I grated 3 large garlic bulbs as I wanted this to be full of flavor and then chopped a few sprigs of garlic from the garden. Then I added the sumac and a little olive oil and mixed it all together and smothered the lamb in this paste and left it marinating for around two hours (40 minutes would suffice)

Beetroot

I have never been in love with beetroot my entire life, that was until I decided to roast it one day. The earthy flavors that beetroot brought to the dish were so comforting that it has become a must-have for big flavors. There are so many ways you can roast the beetroot but I mostly just top and tail and peel off the skin and put it into a roasting tray with a glug of olive oil, salt and a sprig of thyme. It works every time, roasting for around 45 to 60 minutes and you have wonderful earthy flavors on a plate.

lamb with garlic sauce

Garlic

Once upon a time garlic was that foreign species that the culinary foodies back in the day dared to put a little into a spaghetti bolognaise to be suave. Not too much garlic as you didn’t want your breath smelling too much at the office the next day. Step forward to today and garlic is thrown into nearly everything just to bump up the flavor, whether you’re cooking mouth-watering smoked ribs or juicy patties or pork butt with your smoker. When roasted garlic takes on an entirely different flavor. The raw garlic flavor disappears to be replaced with a mild, sweet garlic taste. Simply cut a garlic bulb in half, drizzle over olive oil and salt. Once cooked squeeze out the garlic bulb flesh for a taste sensation.

Roasted Lemon

I’ve never had it before and it was a last-minute addition. But now I am left wondering why I haven’t done this before! I just quartered a lemon and placed on a roasting tray for 30 minutes. The results where tremendous! The edges had gone slightly caramelized and when you scraped the flesh off from the peel, wow is all I can say. Try some and I can assure you that you will do it again and again.

Celeriac

I have only just recently discovered the delights of this earthy flavor. When I buy one as they are often quite large and more than enough for two people I cube the rest and pop it into the freezer to use later. I usually roast celeriac but as I was roasting quite a few other vegetables one time, I decided to change the texture of this and puree it. The taste was wonderful enough to be added to many dishes. I like to make a gratin with turnip, celeriac, garlic cream, and butter every once in a while.

Lamb with Garlic Sauce, Yogurt Horseradish, Tarragon and Pomegranate

lamb with garlic sauce:

Keeping with the theme of big flavors that you deserve from different delicious lamb dishes, I decided to make a sauce from yogurt and horseradish. Next, for texture, I added pomegranate which brought sweetness to the fiery horseradish and then for balance I added tarragon, lemon juice, and sugar.

Ingredients for 2 people

  • 1 shoulder of lamb (I got a small piece that was enough for two people)
  • 2 bulbs of garlic
  • 1 large beetroot
  • 2 shallots
  • 1 red onion
  • 100g of celeriac
  • 1 large carrot
  • 1 turnip
  • 100ml of yogurt
  • 1 pomegranate
  • 1 lemon
  • 75g of frozen peas
  • A handful of fresh mint
  • Handful of rosemary
  • Sprig of rosemary
  • 2 tsp of sumac
  • Olive oil
  • 1 tsp of tarragon
  • 2 tsp of sugar
  • Butter

Directions

lamb with garlic sauce:

Make a paste from 3 cloves of garlic, rosemary, the sumac, and oil. Coat the lamb and allow it to marinate.

Gently poach cubed pieces of celeriac in milk until they become tender and cooked. Once cooked, blend them up and add a little of the poaching liquid and some butter (season well) until they have a nice, smooth consistency. Once this is done add them to a small pan and reheat just before serving.

The Sauce

Here is the final step to cooking lamb. Squeeze the juice from a quarter of the lemon on to the tarragon in a small jug. Now add the yogurt and horseradish. Mix well and add a little sugar to balance (add sugar to taste). Now add the pomegranate seeds and pop into the fridge so the tastes merge. Add the rest of the lemon quarter to the roasting tray with the lamb. Don’t forget to put your garlic on the roasting tray as well.

Cut all the root vegetables into similar pieces – carrots, beetroots, red onions, shallots, turnips and 4 bulbs of garlic. Then add them to a cast iron pan with a splash of olive oil and season. Brown all the vegetables in the pan and once they are at that stage, add the thyme and pop into the oven for around 45 minutes. Don’t forget to add the lamb at the same time (if you have a larger piece of lamb this will need to go in earlier).

lamb with garlic sauce:

Now add the peas to a small dish with some butter and place some cling film on top. Then microwave for 1 min 30 seconds. Remove from dish and add to a blender with the mint, season well and add more butter. Once done, add the mixture to a small pan and reheat later.

Take the lamb out of the oven (I like mine pink). Allow it to rest and at this point, start warming up your peas and pureed celeriac. Warm the plates as well. Once the meat is rested, carve and then add to your plate with other ingredients. Add as much or as little of the sauce as desired. Now enjoy your lamb with garlic sauce and rosemary to the fullest!

Using your grill every season can cause it to wear out and make you realize it might be the time for you to buy a new grill with your hard-earned cash. However, before buying a new grill, it is always best to do some research. Some parts of a gas grill must be periodically replaced while others only need repairing. Charcoal grills do not have as complicated designs as gas grills and can last a long time without the need of replacing grill parts. However, if you feel that your gas or charcoal grill has become too old, or not catering to your needs, you might consider buying a new grill. Here at Grills Forever we have provided a guideline on what to do if your grill is causing trouble for you.

Grill Replacement or Repairing?

Grills usually last for a very long time. Most grills can last more than 5 years, well above their warranty periods. However, even after regular maintenance and covering it whenever needed, often there are issues that will make you realize you have to replace some of the grill parts. If your grill has crossed that warranty line, replacing grill parts is the option. Depending on your budget, you might need to compare the cost of replacing the parts against buying a new grill. To help you make a sound judgment on which grill parts you should be replacing, you should consider these factors.

  • Too much rust or cracks in the firebox or heat source indicate that you have to bid farewell to your grill and get a new one.
  • Grill burners can come with a warranty of up to 10 years so these last a long time. However, if there are any signs of uneven or yellow flames or unusual flaring, you should consider repairing while still under warranty. If burners and igniters have too much grease on and appear corroded, then you should replace them with new ones.
  • If your grill grates are flaking and cracked in some areas, consider replacing them with new ones. Heat barriers should also be replaced every once in a while.
  • Check if the gas hose and regulator are cracked or not. Spray a mixture of dishwashing liquid and water onto the hose and see if the area bubbles or not. If it bubbles, it indicates a gas leak you should definitely replace the gas hose for safety.

Repairing Gas Grills

Replacing grill parts might sound easy to do but it does cost money. Repairing is your budget-friendly option. In fact, repairing gas grills is quite easy, since nowadays many grills require lesser time to disassemble and reassemble. Grill grates, burners, igniters and gas hoses are always better to replace if damaged, but below are the parts that can actually be repaired:

  • The Overfill Prevention Device (OPD) of a gas tank can be damaged and needs repairing.
  • Regulator controls the flow of gas into the grill. If there is a leak or damage in this regulator, it will have to be repaired.
  • There are control valves that control the flow of gas to each of the burners of the valve. These can be disassembled easily. If there are any bugs or clogs inside the valves, clean it out with a thin wire and assemble the part the way it was before.
  • Venturi tubes are present in between the valves and the burners and should be cleaned and repaired if bugs get inside.

Replacing Grill Parts: What to Consider if You Need to Replace Your Grill?

So your grill has lasted a long run and you feel that it is just not good enough for you anymore. If that is the case, you should go through these checkpoints and ensure what type of grill will best cater to your needs.

  1. Budget: Obviously, your budget should always come first when you are deciding to buy a new grill.
  2. Fuel: Actually, this depends on your preference. Would you want to do your BBQ party with a charcoal grill, gas grill, wooden or electric grill? The choice is yours. However, if you are intending to buy a gas grill, then you should consider whether to use natural gas (methane) or propane (LPG). Both gases have little difference in performance. Natural gas is provided directly through a line from a local utility provider. LPG can be purchased in portable refillable tanks.
  3. Location: Do you want a built-in grill or a portable one? Portable grills can be moved around, taken to picnics or outdoor camp spots and are useful if you are moving to a new home. However, if you like to hold indoor BBQ parties and your kitchen has enough space then a built-in grill is a better option for you. This would also give your kitchen a stylish decoration and your home, more value.
  4. Grill Options: Direct heat grills usually have food on top of the fire directly with a tamer plate in between the burner and the grill grate. Indirect heat grills use a briquette system that would deflect direct heat but still able to grill food. You can also buy multiple types of grills for multiple recipes. So along with a grill for ribs and steaks, you can also opt for other grills that have infrared burners or side burners specifically designed for other kinds of recipes. Grills should have efficient ash and grease collecting systems so that the heat source is not interrupted by clogs or juices from food.

  5. Brand and Warranty: Brand reputation matters. A reputed brand would have grills with better construction design, craftsmanship and durable grills that could go on for a prolonged period of time with little maintenance or chances of repairing or replacing, coupled with the reduced risk of a fire hazard. When buying a grill simply shake the unit for a bit. If it feels flimsy or weak, then you should definitely opt for sturdy steel construction design.
  6. Check BTU and Steel Grade: BTU (British Thermal Unit) is used to quantify how much heat energy a grill can produce in an hour. The higher the BTU number the quicker you get to serve food. Also, check the grade of steel used. The lower the number, the better the quality of the stainless steel.
  7. Easy of Assembly: Some grills take hours to assemble and disassemble which could be a nuisance, especially if you want to clean your grill regularly. Go for grills that can be assembled and disassembled much quicker and still work.
  8. Extra Features: If you want your backyard cooking experience to go up a notch, consider other sophisticated components that can come along with your grill. You can choose porcelain grill grates instead of stainless steel or cast iron grates as these do not rust easily and last long. Some grills come with LED lights so that you can cook at night time. This is perfect for backyard night BBQ parties. If you like to cook for a large number of people then you should consider buying a larger grill with more burners, such as infrared burners. You might want to buy a gas grill that comes with shelves, cabinets and drawers to be able to keep spices and accessories required while grilling. Other add-ons include an integrated refrigeration unit, deep frying features, heat barriers, rotisseries, etc.

Most grills last for a minimum of 3 years without requiring any maintenance. With proper cleaning and regular inspection, your grill can last as many as 7 years or even more. All types of grills should be cleaned regularly to ensure better performance and should be covered to prevent dust and bugs to clog the systems. However even after such careful procedures, often grill parts become too damaged to use, so they need to be repaired. Nowadays, grills are less complicated in terms of design and thus users can repair themselves. Specific parts of a grill should be replaced instead of repairing. Replacing grill parts could be a bit costly. However, if you think that your grill has lived a long life and is way too old to fix, then you should consider welcoming a new grill to your yard.
